Ralph Lemon: In Proximity

Sound design, music, technical direction
World Premiere: Venice 2022
US Premiere: MOMA PS1 2025

Working with Ralph is great because he's really good at opening up new avenues of inquiry. I feel like I always come out of his project with more ideas I want to try out than I went in with.

So I was excited to hear that PS1 wanted to present In Proxmity as part of his Ceremonies Out of the Air show. Putting it together in 2022 in Venice was a blast. And I really like the process of iteratively making a piece. Like I said, with Ralph often you come out with more ideas than you went in with.

For this iteration, Ralph and I continued to develop our work with extremely quiet music and sound on the threshold of perception.

After our first collaboration in Venice, I was very excited to revisit the music section at the end with Samita. Even in Venice, I knew I wanted to lean into tracking the frequency her wailing, and then use that frequency data to construct a harmonic language. With the lessons learned in Venice I was able to create a small suite of max for live devices for generating bass lines, harmonies and countrapuntal lines from Samita's live vocal performance.

I was really proud of the work I did on the NYC show. It was another one of those, like Electric Lucifer, where I really had to draw on everything I know how to do. Exhausting, but deeply rewarding.
